PREVIEW

Jerry Lai - USA TODAY Sports

Diego Schwartzman and Tomas Berdych meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Australian Open.

Diego Schwartzman is coming off a five sets win over Denis Kudla that took 52 games to decide. In the victory, Schwartzman won 63 percent of his first serve points and 72 percent of his second serve points. Schwartzman won 65 percent of his total service points and produced nine breaks on 18 break points. Schwartzman has played nine sets to get to this point and is coming off a nearly four hour match, so it’s going to be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank. Schwartzman hasn’t won three matches in a single tournament since last years French Open. Schwartzman hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in his career. Schwartzman has won four of his last five matches on hard court.

Tomas Berdych is coming off a straight sets win over Robin Haase that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Berdych won 88 percent of his first serve points and 74 percent of his second serve points. Berdych won 73 percent of his total service points and didn’t face a single break point in a victory that took less than an hour and a half. Berdych has faced just one break point in his first six sets, and when you add his four wins in Doha, the 33-year-old seems to be in great form to start the 2019 year. Berdych hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the 11th time in his last 15 tries. Berdych has lost before the fourth round of the Australian Open once since 2011. Berdych has matches on hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

As if Berdych wouldn’t be the favorite to win this match on even terms, he’s played less tennis in his first two matches combined than Schwartzman played in his last marathon five setter. Grand slam play can often be a battle of conditioning on the mens side, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see some tired legs from Schwartzman at some point. Even with a day off, it's not easy to rebound from a five set match and then get ready for another three, four set match. We see guys fold all the time under these circumstances. Berdych is also in great form, which included a final run in Doha, so he’s tough to bet against regardless.

Mr. Consistent: Berdych Through To Fourth Round

ATP WORLD TOUR  |  18 January 2019

The usual suspects – Federer, Nadal, Djokovic – and the next wave of ATP Tour talent – Zverev, Tsitsipas, Shapovalov – have been stealing the homepage slots. But quietly and confidently, Tomas Berdych is – again – powering his way through the Australian Open draw.

The 33-year-old Czech advanced to the fourth round in Melbourne for the 11th time on Friday, coming back from a set down against Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Berdych finally lost his serve, in the 11th game of the first set, after holding 32 consecutive times to start the tournament.

But he never lost it again, erasing seven of eight break points against the 18th-seeded Schwartzman, who was trying to reach the fourth round for the second consecutive year in Australia.

The 6'5” Czech missed the last five months of the 2018 season because of back pain, but he's looked agile and all the smarter for taking the time off. The former World No. 4 will face second seed Rafael Nadal or Australia's #NextGenATP star Alex de Minaur.

Tomas Berdych continues comeback

Tomas Berdych roared back from losing the opening set against the 18th seed Diego Schwartzman to book his place in the last 16 of the Australian Open with a 5-7 6-3 7-5 6-4 victory at the Melbourne Arena.

It is the 11th time that Berdych has reached the round of 16 at the first Grand Slam of the year, and the two-time Australian Open finalist will face the winner of Alex De Minaur's clash with Rafael Nadal in the first match of the night session at the Rod Laver Arena.

Berdych, who is not seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time since Wimbledon 2005, reeled off some booming aces in a love service game to begin proceedings.

The Czech entered the encounter having not dropped a set this week, but he was broken in the 11th game in his first ever match with Schwartzman. Last year's French Open quarter-finalist stung his opponent with a round-the-net winner and a thumping forehand earned him the right to serve out the first set in 51 minutes.

But Berdych - who missed much of last season through back trouble - recovered, improving his forehand returns with 20 winners and only seven unforced errors, snaring the break before holding to win the second set and level the match.

In a tight third set, Schwartzman was the first to pass up the chance of a break in the eighth game, and the Argentine was made to pay as Berdych took the second of three break points to take the crucial break before serving out the set.

Schwartzman's first serve continued to tire with Berdych punishing on the second, and he had no response as the Czech struck early in the fourth set with a forehand winner.

The man from Buenos Aires played nine sets in the opening two rounds, and fatigue appeared to play its toll as Berdych showed his rich array of skills to serve out the win on the cusp of three hours of play

Berdych, 33, is through to this stage of the competition for the eighth time in the last nine years after a 5-7 6-3 7-5 6-4 victory over 18th seed Diego Schwartzman. His beautiful wife Ester Satorova was spotted cheering on her husband in the stands at the first tennis grand slam of the year. The stunning 26-year-old, who married the tennis ace four years ago, stood out from the crowd in a classy black jacket.

Tomas Berdych: Another good day at the office

Tomas Berdych has quietly been going on with his business with the Czech progressing into the Fourth Round of the Australian Open after defeating No.18 seed Diego Schwartzman 5-7 6-3 7-5 6-4. He is set to play the winner of Rafael Nadal and Alex de Minaur for a place in the quarterfinals. “I will watch, but not the whole match,” Berdych said.

“I also want to have my time, not spending it just on tennis, number one. Number two, I don’t really care [who I play]. Let them play, let them enjoy. Both are great players, one making history playing for so long winning so many slams and the upcoming star from Australia.

I’m gonna be ready for either of them.” The Czech was also cautious about how he goes about taking care of the Argentine. “Well I think we can find a couple of advantages on my side and some on his side,” Berdych said of the height difference.

“That’s the beauty of our sport that we can have such different players … Really, I mean, you just have to take your advantages and play your best.” He then ended by saying that he was content with his performance and looking forward to the challenges head.
