24 September 2017 - Team Europe beat Team World 15-9 to win the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague --- Europe began the final day with a 9-3 lead, but, after a win apiece in the opening two matches on Sunday, John Isner beat Rafael Nadal 7-5 7-6 (7-1) to cut the advantage to 12-9. Roger Federer then went to a match tie-break with Nick Kyrgios, who had a chance to force a deciding doubles. However, Federer saved match point and won 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 11-9 to spark jubilant celebrations. The competition, which follows a similar format to the Ryder Cup, saw Federer and Nadal play doubles together for the first time on Saturday. There was one point awarded for victories on day one, two for wins on day two and three for victories on the final day. "It has been such an amazing and fun week and I'm so pleased the event has worked as it has," Federer, 36, said. "The camaraderie in the group was amazing and we are all so happy. Time will tell how big the Laver Cup will become."

Tomas Berdych skips Davis Cup, but he will play Laver Cup --- Davis Cup (15-17 Sept 2017) is getting closer and the first withdrawals come. Tomas Berdych has already announced that he won't play the World Group play-offs tie against Netherlands that will take place from 15 to 17 September on indoor clay-court in Zuiderpark, away from home. At the moment Berdych is fully focusing on his singles career and he will play three tournaments in the Asian swing - Shenzhen, Pechino and Shanghai - trying to qualify for ATP Finals in London. He is 11th in the ATP Race but he has good chances as Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic who are ahead of him are injured. 'Playing that event is already a success and for how many years will I have the chance to do it?', said Berdych, who is not motivated by playing the best World team competition anymore. 'We already gave our best. I could give my farewell to Davis Cup (next year) in front of my crowd, maybe if Radek Stepanek (who has back issues) will play too.' In Czech Republic there was already much criticism as the 31-year-old will play Rod Laver Cup exhibition from 22 to 24 September. Berdych, who was very motivated by the high appearance fee, has no regrets: 'Who wants to criticize, does it always. I make my own schedule and I don't need to apologize.'

Tomas Berdych was sent home early from the US Open by Alexandr Dolgopolov on Thursday, who bounced back from a set down in their second round clash. Fifteenth seed Berdych appeared to be making light work of his Ukrainian opponent after taking the opening set 6-3, but Dolgopolov swiftly levelled the playing field racing through the second set to win 6-1. Dolgopolov was relentless in the final set taking a commanding lead over Berdych, ending the match with a 3-6 6-1 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 victory to see him into the third round for the first time since 2012.

CINCINNATI Round 1: Tuesday, 15 August 2017 --- MATCH REPORT: Juan Martin del Potro made a winning return on Tuesday at the Western & Southern Open, after a four-year absence from the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Del Potro, the 2012 and 2013 semi-finalist, got the better of Czech No. 10 seed Tomas Berdych, 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-0 for a place in the second round against American qualifier Mitchell Krueger. Berdych settled into his service rhythm early on and broke his Argentinean opponent for a 3-1 lead and did not lose a first service point until the 10th game. As del Potro worked his way back, Berdych began to lack confidence. Del Potro struck a winner off a third successive slice backhand to break for a 3-1 advantage in the second set. Three mistimed forehands when serving for the set at 5-3 cost del Potro as Berdych broke back, but the Argentinean controlled the tie-break and finished with an ace. The third set was one-way traffic for del Potro, who improved to 5-3 lifetime against 2011 and 2013 Cincinnati semi-finalist Berdych, who missed last week's Coupe Rogers due to a rib injury.

The No. 10 seed from the Czech Republic was due to face Nikoloz Basilashvili in first-round play on Tuesday afternoon. He was replaced by lucky loser Ernesto Escobedo, who went on to Basilashvili 7-6(4), 6-4. "I am sorry I have to apologize all my Montreal fans. I couldn't play, because of my rib disfunction I need to get well to go to office soon!!," Berdych tweeted. The 31-year-old has 13 career titles but is yet to win this year. He's posted a 33-15 record so far in 2017.

Friday, August 4, 2017 --- Kokkinakis Stuns Berdych For Maiden Final --- #NextGenATP Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis continued his remarkable run this week by reaching his first ATP World Tour singles final on Friday at Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex, rallying to defeat top seed Tomas Berdych in Los Cabos 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. "I showed some glimpses of good tennis this year, so to do that consistently this week in Los Cabos means a lot," said Kokkinakis. "I've had great support from the fans here all week. I love it here and I'll definitely be coming back a few more times. " The 21 year old was sidelined from singles competition for 18 months with a laundry list of injuries, but returned to singles action this past May. In just his fourth tournament back, he defeated Milos Raonic at the Aegon Championships. Kokkinakis is currently No. 454 in the Emirates ATP Rankings after six tournaments, but will move to around No. 225 when the newest standings are released on Monday. A win in the final will put him around No. 165. Berdych grabbed the lone break of the opening set at 4-3, but Kokkinakis regrouped in the second set by storming to a 6/2 lead in the tie-break before eventually forcing a decider. The Aussie led by 5-2 in the final set, but nerves began to take over trying to close out the match. He dropped his serve and squandered four match points, but ultimately regrouped to prevail in two hours and 18 minutes.
