Tomas has arrived in Stockholm

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - Czech Tomas Berdych, the No. 2 seed at the If Stockholm Open, met a young fan on Wednesday at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament.

Tomas who was in Abu Dhabi on Monday, then had two extra days off (Tuesday and Wednesday) thanks to a first round bye at the If Stockholm Open. He will open against Jurgen Zopp from Estonia. They have played againt each other once before, it was at this year’s US Open in New York where Tomas easily won in 3 straight sets.

No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych against Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp.

Berdych has been strong the past two months, winning 16 of his last 20 matches and now in prime position to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (the Top 5 already have qualified and he is No. 6 in the race). Berdych is trying to win a career-best 54th match of the season (won 53 last year) and advance to his 13th quarter-final in 2012. After a first round bye he gets his Stockholm campaign started against Zopp, who lost in their previous meeting easily - 61 64 62 in the first round of the US Open this summer (saving the only break point he faced and cruising in an hour and 32 minutes). Zopp is trying to reach his second ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season. In July, he advanced to the quarters on Swedish soil in Bastad.

Berdych Cruises Into Stockholm QFs

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopeful Tomas Berdych made a strong start Thursday at the If Stockholm Open, defeating Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp 6-1, 6-4. The second-seeded Czech broke Zopp three times en route to the 71-minute victory.

Berdych has now reached the quarter-finals or better in his past five tournaments, beginning with his runner-up finish at the Winston-Salem Open in August (d. Isner). He is next in line to qualify for the season-ending championships, to be held at The O2 in London from 5-12 November, currently in the No. 6 position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings Race to London.
