Tomas Berdych eliminates Querrey in 4 sets at US Open
In battle of big power, Berdych proves too much

In an entertaining battle between two of the biggest hitters on tour, Tomas Berdych showed perseverance to go with his power, holding off the spirited challenge of 24-year-old American Sam Querrey, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
Berdych moves into the round-of-16 here at the Open for the fourth time in his career -- a round he has, significantly, never gotten past. In fact, thus far in his career, New York is his least successful Grand Slam. Since 2010 he’s managed to reach the quarters of the Australian Open, the semis of the French and the finals of Wimbledon.
Querrey, who came into the Open after a solid summer hardcourt season where he won Los Angeles and went 13-4 overall to place third in the Emirates Airlines US Open Series, is now 0-5 versus top-10 opponents this year.
Querrey jumped out early in this battle, taking the first set after a well played tiebreaker where he hit four aces and outplayed the No. 6 seed from the baseline when it counted. He kept his momentum going early in the second, breaking Berdych to go up 2-0.
But the Czech returned the favor quickly. He broke Querrey back-to-back to go up 4-3, the second time off a Querrey miss on an easy overhead sitter. Berdych managed to hold on serve to even things at a set a piece, and then took control of the third right off the bat with a break in Querrey’s first service game.
While Querrey challenged Berdych throughout the match, he failed to take advantage of numerous openings. He converted on just one of 11 break point opportunities. He also struggled when he went to net, where he won just 16 of 32 points.
Life doesn’t get any easier for Berdych going forward. He moves into the fourth round, where he will take on the No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain. The winner of that match will then likely face No. 1 seed Roger Federer.
