by ATP Staff | 21.08.2012
Five-time former champion Roger Federer has been named the top seed for the 2012 US Open, which begins on 27 August.
Federer, who has a 61-7 at the hard-court Grand Slam championship in New York, won five straight titles from 2004 to 2008. He is tied with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras for most US Open titles in the Open Era (since 1968). The Swiss superstar will be bidding to capture his 18th major title.
Serbian Novak Djokovic, who beat Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 in last year’s final, is the second seed. Britain’s Andy Murray, the singles gold medallist at the London 2012 Olympics and 2008 US Open runner-up, is No. 3 seed. Spain’s David Ferrer, the 2007 semi-finalist, is fourth seed. John Isner is the highest-seeded American at No. 9, while 2003 titlist Andy Roddick is No. 20 seed.
US Open organisers have followed the South African Airways ATP Rankings of Monday, 20 August to determine the seeds. This is the 11th consecutive year that the US Open has seeded 32 players.
The singles draw ceremony will take place on Thursday at 12 noon EST.
