Winston-Salem Open Notebook: Late-addition Berdych now among favorites

Until a few days ago, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic wasn't even sure if he was going to play in the Winston-Salem Open.
Now he is the No. 2 seed and one of the favorites to make it to Saturday's final after receiving a wild card into the tournament last week.
Berdych played his second-round match on Tuesday, knocking off Alex Bogomolov of Russia 6-3, 7-5. His third-round match will be against No. 16 seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland today.
"I just felt like I needed some more matches on hard courts for the U.S. Open," Berdych said. "I actually didn't have a very good summer and I wanted to play a little bit more before the last Grand Slam. I am very happy that I was able to come and play here."
Berdych wasn't impressed with the way he played against Bogomolov.
"It was nothing really special from my side, just some solid games," he said.
Berdych said he is impressed with the facilities at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
"I was really very surprised when I came here for the first time because I didn't know anything about the place," he said. "I really like it. The people really take care of us here. I am a fan of quiet places instead of places that are real huge like what is going to come next week (at the U.S. Open in New York)."
